Bereavement Library: In November of 2001, The Dorfman Chapel opened one of
the most complete bereavement libraries in the Country, with over 250 books covering
all aspects of death and dying and coping with loss. In addition, there are several
videos for both children and adults and workbooks that are given out free of charge
to anyone who requests one. The library is not only for those suffering a loss; many
of the books are for professional people who are in contact with bereaved people,
such as hospice volunteers, social workers, psychologists, teachers, etc....
The library hours are from Monday to Thursday, 9:00am to 5:00pm, and on Friday from
9:00am to 3:00pm. We are closed on Saturday and on Jewish holidays. There is no
charge to borrow a book or video.
Referral to a professional: If grief is overwhelming and the support groups are not enough, we can provide the names of several professionals in the area for additional assistance.
Support Groups at Temples or Synagogues: Many local Temples and Synagogues run support groups throughout the year. Please feel free to contact our office if you would like additional information on these groups.
Books on Grief: A web site with numerous books, videos, and pamphlets on issues surrounding death, dying and bereavement is grief.com.
Local grief and loss support groups: The Jewish Hospice and Chaplaincy Network offers a listing of local partners on their website jewishhospice.org.
Hospice of Michigan: Hospice (www.hom.org) runs monthly support groups free of charge and open to the community. They also have support groups for living with someone who is terminally ill.
Hints on Condolence Notes: Sometimes it is difficult to know what (or what not) to say in a condolence note or in a visit with the bereaved. These external page on condolence advise and best and worst things to say gives some hints on how to write a condolence note and/or comfort the bereaved.
