Family Members:
Esther Bornstein, 98, of Farmington Hills, MI, passed away on 5 May 2026 surrounded by immediate family members. Born in Detroit, MI on 10 January 1928 to Sam and Bertha Klein, she was the elder sister to Morris (Sonny) and Charles Klein. She and Floyd Bornstein were married in 1948 and were together for 65 years before his passing in 2013.

Esther attended Central High School, graduating in 1946, later attending Wayne State University for two years, majoring in English. For many years she worked at Kelter-Thorner Insurance Agency, initially as a bookkeeper, and eventually as the comptroller. Before joining the work force she focused on raising her three children, Linda, Carol, and Allan, at their home in Livonia, MI. In 1976, she and Floyd moved to Hampshire House Condominiums in Farmington Hills, where she resided until her passing. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed collecting antiques, even working with her close friend, Sarah Iwrey (Osborne), selling their collectibles for several years. She was a passionate reader with a library worthy of envy, eventually giving away many of her holdings to close friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd, and his two brothers (Phil and Norm) and their spouses (Lois and Barb, respectively); her youngest brother Charles and his spouse (Sandy) and her middle brother Sonny.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Marilyn Klein (spouse of Sonny); her three children, Linda Dunn (Danny) of Munster, IN, Carol Bornstein of Santa Barbara, CA, and Allan Bornstein (Nancy) of Cape Girardeau, MO; three grandchildren (Laura Dunn of New Orleans, Aaron Bornstein of St. Louis, and Sam Bornstein (Emily) of Atlanta; six great grandchildren (Liam, Owen, Reid, Anderson, Miles, and Jocelyn Bornstein); and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her late-in-life partner, Milt Weinger, whose companionship during the last few years brought her muchlaughter and joy.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at Henry Ford Hospital – West Bloomfield for their compassionate care during Esther’s last days, and especially Cendin Brewer and Donna Corey (+ Mike Stiles) for their care and wonderful friendship over the last several months (and beyond) while she was still living at home. We also greatly appreciate the entire Weinger family, who became a blessing and second family to Esther, truly representing the best of humanity.
