Family Members:
Dr. Lucia A. Schuger, a physician-scientist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Chicago, passed away on February 3, 2026 at age 71, leaving a legacy of groundbreaking work in cell and developmental biology with important implications for understanding the molecular processes controlling the structure and function of the lungs.

She was born in Buenos Aires in 1954, received her MD from the University of Buenos Aires. She emigrated to Israel in 1978 where she did her residency in pathology at Hebrew University, then worked at Haddasah Medical Center in Jerusalem. She held positions at the University of Michigan, Boston University, Wayne State University and the University of Chicago. She received a highly prestigious NIH MERIT Award for her research on lung development.

Lucy was also a gifted artist, and her work was shown at Cornelia Art Center in Chicago and the Gutman Gallery Ann Arbor.

A soulful poet and writer, Lucy nonetheless found her greatest fulfillment in her friendships. She poured her spirit and time into those she loved, offering a lifetime of unwavering support—and because of this, she was loved by many in return.

She is survived by her husband, David Buch, her son Ariel Schuger (Marisela), her daughter Noa Owen (Mark), her sister Alicia Nakama, four grandchildren, cousin, nieces, nephews and many dear colleagues and friends.
