Phil always had a smile on his face and liked to joke around so much that friends and family could never really tell whether his stories were real or fiction. Each time a story was told, it became slightly more fantastical. Growing up he played football at The Kiski School outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and his 1956 varsity team was inducted into their Hall of Fame for an undefeated season, even playing against some college teams. He continued playing tackle as a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh. After graduating from Pitt with both undergraduate and MBA degrees he eventually found his way to Detroit working for Ford and then Coopers and Lybrand (now PWC) before retiring and starting his own firm, Levin Development. Later in life Phil enjoyed attending meetings of the Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham.
He met the love of his life, Fran, at a local public pool in 1958. Since then they have been inseparable, and have spent the last 67 years giving meaning to the words “loving each other more than the day before.” They lit up the room when they were together, smiling and holding hands like they first met. They kept active their entire lives playing tennis, golf, or going to the gym together. It didn’t matter what activity they did, as long as it was together–even watching Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune in the evenings.
Phil is survived by his wife Fran, was the cherished father of Erika (Jordan Shavit) and Robert (Curtis Schuhmacher), and loving grandfather to Eli and Simon. Devoted brother to Gail Fried (Walter). He was predeceased by siblings Arnold (Anita) and Elaine. He was the precious son of the late George and Elizabeth Levin. He is survived by many nieces, nephews, and numerous loving friends and relatives.
