- James Michael Wechsler, 83, of West Bloomfield Township passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 12, 2025. Jimmy, as he was known to his family and friends, was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was born December 1, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan to Louis and Irene (Fischer) Wechsler. He was ever loyal to his alma mater, the University of Michigan, always wearing his Michigan hat wherever he went. After graduating from U of M, he went on to study law at Wayne State University Law School. Jimmy practiced law for 55 years, specializing in Social Security Disability. Following in his late father’s footsteps as a lawyer, Jimmy committed his career to helping the most vulnerable people in need, saving lives in the process. In his free time, he enjoyed being in and exploring nature, traveling with his family, and participating in sports. He was deeply in love with and spent over 40 years adoring his wife, Colleen Finnerty-Wechsler, mother of their son. He is remembered fondly by his former wife, Barbara Wechsler, mother of their three daughters. He was a kind and adventurous father, admired by his four children, Julie (Tony) Primak, Lori Wechsler, Amy (Don White) Wechsler, and Shane Wechsler. Always the teacher and trusted therapist, he taught his kids everything from appreciating music, riding a bike, driving a car, and navigating, both literally and figuratively, through life's toughest challenges and happiest moments. Jimmy was "Papa Jim" to his beloved grandson, Jake Primak, with whom he bonded through their mutual love of cameras, vinyl records, and the University of Michigan. You often saw Jimmy taking movies of his family, documenting all of life's most important moments, for which he was always present. Jimmy was a brilliant, social man that always had his heart in the right place. He will be deeply missed and loved forever.
