Judith was born in Detroit on August 10, 1946, the daughter of Dr. Herman Sperling, a dentist and World War II veteran, and Estelle (Jameson) Sperling, a kindergarten teacher. She grew up in Huntington Woods and graduated from Dondero High School in Royal Oak.
Judith earned a B.A. in History and English and a master's degree in Russian and Eastern European History at the University of Michigan, where she also met her future husband.
A passionate and inspiring educator, Judith taught high school history and English for 34 years in the Fenton, Farmington Community Education, Berkley, Roeper, and Avondale school systems.
Upon retiring from teaching in 2003, she became an award-winning portrait artist in oil paint and was just a few gold points short of becoming a bridge Life Master.
Judith married John Kamins of Chicago just one week after their college graduation inn 1968 and went on to share 57 devoted years together.
Judith was a dedicated advocate for medical research and public health. She worked alongside her husband as a full partner during his 2½ years as National Chair and 16 years on the National Board of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, actively supporting the organization's mission and lobbying Congress on Capitol Hill to increase federal funding for medical research. In her broader community, she held leadership roles as an original officer of Yavneh Academy, an assistant officer of the National Council of Jewish Women (Michigan chapter), and as Chair of the Religious School and a member of the Executive Committee at Temple Beth El.
Judith will be remembered for her intellectual curiosity, artistic spirit, sharp wit, and unwavering devotion to her family, students, and community. She loved reading, oil painting, the theater, playing bridge, and traveling the world with her husband and friends.
Beloved wife of John Kamins. Dear mother of Robert (Yasmin Anwar) Kamins and Heather (Patrick Iwanicki) Kamins. Loving grandmother of Dahlia Kamins, Leena Kamins and Isla Iwanicki. Devoted sister of Linda (Harlan) Cohen and sister-in-law of Karen (Jack) Forster. Also survived by her dearest caregiver, Violeta Lekaj and many other family members and friends. Judith was the dear daughter of the late Dr. Herman and Estelle Sperling.
