Mitch was renowned for his vibrant personality and his ability to uplift everyone he encountered. His life was a testament to living authentically and passionately, breaking conventional barriers and embracing every adventure that came his way. His humor, strength, and caring nature left a lasting impact on all who knew him. A lifelong learner and sharer of knowledge, his curiosity fueled many adventures throughout his 92 years, bringing joy and enlightenment to himself and others.
After attending three years at Cass Technical High School in Detroit, MI, Mitch dropped out of high school and joined the Navy during the Korean War where he served on a destroyer as a Navy Hospital Corpsman. Following his service, Mitch took advantage of the GI Bill to attend the University of Michigan, where he earned a Ph.D. in Urban & Regional Planning, an M.S. in Physics, an M.S. in Mathematics and a B.S. in Mathematics. His academic and professional pursuits were not just careers but callings that mirrored his deep-seated values of family, community, and service.
Mitch leaves behind a loving family: his wife, Carole Rycus; children, Lisa (Saulius) Mikalonis and Peter (Meena Bajracharya) Rycus; grandchildren, Sam (Dr. Natasha Kizy) Mikalonis, Evan (fiancée Lauren Flynn) Mikalonis, Tyler (fiancée Emily Malmsten) Mikalonis, and Abe Rycus; and great-granddaughter, Mila Lou Mikalonis. He was a devoted brother to Mel (the late Barbara) Rycus and is also survived by numerous cherished family members and friends.
