Family Members:
Bernard Malamud PE, age 90, beloved husband of Shirley (Nosanchuk) Malamud for 66 years. A lifelong resident of Michigan, Bernie graduated from Cass Tech High School and Detroit Institute of Technology (DIT) with a Civil Engineering degree. He worked 35-plus years in the federal civil service (three years of which were in active service with the U.S. Army and the remainder for the Detroit District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.) He also served as the Detroit District Corps of Engineers’ representative to the International Joint Commission(IJC) Great Lakes waterways. Among his many distinctions, he received the Exceptional Civil Service Award from the Department of Army. After his retirement from the Corps, Bernie also worked as a consultant engineer for the private sector.
Avid travelers, Bernie and Shirley toured more than 60 different countries and also visited numerous sites throughout North America. Bernie was also a huge sports fan, Tigers Fantasy Camp alum, and an enthusiastic softball player into his seventies. A longtime volunteer, Bernie was the pace car driver for Race for the Cure (Detroit) for more than 20 years, and also volunteered with Special Olympics and Channel 56.
He is remembered by his beloved wife Shirley, children Ilene and Dr. Marc Hirsch, Karen and William Koenig, Ken and Ted (Hua) Malamud, and grandchildren Brett (Sonita) Koenig, Kyle Koenig (Meredith Stopka), Sydney Hirsch (fiancé Sam Argyle) and Michael Hirsch. He also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law Barbara and Sander Papo, and many dear and wonderful relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Esther Malamud, parents-in-law Ben and Ann Nosanchuk, and sister-in-law Miriam Nosanchuk.
With Bernie’s passing, the “Three Musketeers,” childhood friends Bernie Malamud, Burt Meisel and Eugene Friedman, are no longer.
