- Family Members:
- Howard Benjamin Bragman, age 66, died on February 11, 2023, in Los Angeles, CA, after a short battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by those he loved - his husband Mike, his brother Alan, his niece Lizzy and many of his dearest friends.
Born and raised in Flint, Michigan and a graduate of the University of Michigan in 1978, he began his public relations career with Burson Marsteller in Chicago before settling in Los Angeles. Nothing made Howard more proud than to be known as the husband of Mike Maimone. He is also survived by his brother Alan and was an adored uncle to Adam, David, Lizzy, Ben and Julie and cousin and friend to countless people.
In 1989, Howard cofounded and led the influential public relations firm Bragman Nyman Cafarelli (BNC), where he established himself as one of the premiere publicists in the business. He exited in 2001 after successfully navigating a sale of the company to Interpublic Group. Howard went on to serve as an Adjunct Professor in Public Relations at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Center for Communication from 1998 to 2003. In 2005, he founded another successful company, Fifteen Minutes PR and then in 2019, La Brea Media.
Howard became one of America’s best-known public relations and crisis experts due to his wisdom, authenticity, unique brand of humor, and straightforward yet empathetic manner. He worked with some of the most recognized people in the world and helped manage numerous high-profile press moments. Howard received countless awards for his tireless work as an activist for those with HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ+ civil rights, and Jewish causes. In 2021, he contributed a $1 million endowment to establish the Howard Bragman Coming Out Fund at the University of Michigan.
Howard specialized in crisis management and media relations for his clients and was often featured as an expert on every imaginable media platform. He was a news consultant for ABC News, and he also frequently appeared on CNN, as well as an on-air expert for shows such as “Good Morning America,” “Today,” and “Larry King Live.” His energy and insight made him a celebrity himself. In 2008, he wrote the best-selling book, “Where’s My Fifteen Minutes? Get Your Company, Your Cause, or Yourself the Recognition You Deserve.”
To those who knew him best, Howard was a true and steadfast friend, a larger-than-life personality, and a constant source of joy and laughter. His memory will be celebrated with a smile and a commitment to activism.
