Dr. Richard Swartz, a resident of Ann Arbor, Michigan, died on October 11th, 2021 at the age of 75. Funeral services arranged by The Dorfman Chapel.

Religious services will be held on Thursday and Saturday evenings at 7:30PM.

Dr. Swartz was born in Charelston, WV, raised in Detroit, MI, and attended Mumford High. He received his B.S. and M.D. degrees from the University of Michigan. Following his service in the Army, Dr. Swartz completed his internship and residency at Boston City Hospital, Harvard Medical School, he completed a residency at Boston City Hospital, Boston University Medical School, and a nephrology fellowship at Beth Israel Hospital, Harvard Medical School. He joined the University of Michigan faculty as an assistant professor in 1977, was promoted to associate professor in 1982 and full professor in 1987.
Dr. Swartz was widely regarded for his expertise in the area of chronic kidney disease, end-stage renal disease, and on end-of-life care for patients. He has widely published and presented regularly at national meetings. His expertise was also recognized by his appointment to the editorial board of the American Journal of Kidney Disease,and in his role as assistant editor for Advances in Renal Replacement Therapy. He served as medical director of acute dialysis for 30 years, as well as roles of chief of clinic, director of the inpatient service, chief of staff, member of the Medical School's Executive Committee for Clinical Affairs, and the Institutional Review Board. Dr. Swartz was the recipient of numerous awards, including the University of Michigan's H. Marvin Pollard Award for outstanding resident teaching, and the National Kidney Foundation of Michigan's Distinguished Service Award. He was listed as one of the "Best Doctors in America" every year since 2006. His commitment, dedication and advocacy to his patients, co-workers, and students drove him throughout his long career.
Dr. Swartz was dedicated to his family and friends, of which he had many. He was a loving husband, an amazing father, a doting grandfather, an avid cyclist, fisherman, world traveler, crossword puzzle afficionado, cribbage player, cook, and overall scholar and reader. He will be greatly missed by everyone that knew and loved him.
