Family Members:
Calvin Herbert Blum, former Air Force Master Sargent for 23 1/2 years, passed away August 18th 2020. He came from a family of 5 boys, four of them in service at the same time defending their country. He met his wife Phyllis when he was 12 and she was 10. They stayed in touch for 81 & 1/2 years. On June 26, 1952 they had a fairy tail wedding on CBS television nationwide. The fairytale continued as the family grew. They were blessed with 4 children, Laurence, Arlin, Keith and his wife, Dawn, and Adina. Then came the grandchildren Breanna, Maxwell, Mia, Preston and Bentley.

Calvins father Abraham among many virtues, was a famous Yiddish playwright on 2d Avenue in NYC. His father, Abe mastered 12 languages and worked with the government to welcome foreign dignitaries. Abe talents became a significant influence on Calvins love and appreciation for the arts and music. He then played trumpet and performed in Wurlitzer Youth Orchestra in New York. Also in observing his fathers desire to connect people, Calvin always strived to improve relations in the countries he was stationed. As a result he worked with Washington to establish the People to People Program in Japan. Washington obliged sending books and supplies to Japanese schools which Calvin and his wife Phyllis used to teach Japanese children English. Following the term, the local teachers said “We will always be able to tell which kids you taught-they are the only Japanese speaking with Brooklyn accents!” After Calvins time in service he became a expert on the M1 tank, wrote technical manuals and instructed others.

Calvins accomplishments were well noted with awards, medals and countless memories of stories never forgotten. He sprinkled his joyous humor even in the most stressful of times. We also must remember the pride, love and humility Calvin maintained even to the end for his family and country.
