Lester Shindler (92) and Lillian Shindler (91) died in separate locations, but within minutes of each other, on April 16, 2020.
Lester and Lil met at a high school dance, and married in 1948. Lester went to work for Lil’s father Julius at Parker Brothers Shoes in Detroit, while Lillian was the lead secretary for the Nuclear Plant in Monroe, MI. Parker Brothers Shoes was located on TwelfthStreet and Clairmont, which was the epicenter of the Detroit Riots, and was looted. They rebuilt the business, which was again looted in 1968, and forced to close. Lester purchased Brody’s Tots & Teens in Oak Park in 1969, and together he and Lillian built it into a thriving business. They were well known in the community for selling hundreds of bar mitzvah suits, thousands of duffel bags, and plenty of other things you didn’t know you needed. They loved movies, shows, old cars, their family, and their work. The two of them were inseparable, yin & yang, and did everything together right up until the very end.
They are survived by their son Marc (Shelley) Shindler and daughter Shara (William) Stewart, grandchildren Jennie (Adam) Gnesin, Julie (Marc) Cohen, Adam (Jessica) Shindler, Zach (Cassy) Stewart and Alana (Darren) Suiter, and great-grand children Ellery& Parker Gnesin, Dean, Grace& Anna Cohen, Noah, Liam&Peyton Stewart, and Jacob&Ava Suiter.
