- FLORENCE RICE was born Florence Spring to Sam and Frieda Spring in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on September 4, 1917. At the tender age of three she crossed into the United States from Canada with proud parents Sam and Frieda plus big sister Beatrice to begin a long and fulfilling life in dynamic Detroit. Along the way she married Ernie Citron and presented the world son Richard in 1941 and daughter Carol four years later. After losing Ernie to a heart attack at age 43 in 1957, she married Jesse Rice a few years later in 1959. The family was instantly expanded to include Jesse's twin sons Don and Ron Rice. Florence lost her beloved Carol to cancer in the year 2000. Son Richard and daughter-in-law Renée Citron live in northern Italy near Venice. Granddaughter Nicole Citron lives in Cap d'Ail, France. Grandson Jason Rice lives in Chicago, Ill. Grandaughter Carrie Rice and grandson Erik Rice live San Francisco, CA and Julie Rice lives in Santa Monica, CA. Then, of course, came the inevitable and wonderful great grandchildren: Max Crovetto, Jordan and Andrew Rice, Isaac and Ari Rice. By force of personality and a special kind of caring, Florence stayed in regular touch with her far flung family. Very much part of Florence's daily life these past few years were her very special nieces Sara Brooks, Ruth Beresh and Arline Gould, who all lived nearby, visited with Florence regularly and boosted her spirits tremendously. A life so long lived is an extraordinary thing, made even more extraordinary, in this case, by the woman who lived it. Florence Rice was wisdom, elegance and love. The world is a lesser place without her in it.
