- Mildred Barbara Simon, “Millie,” age 99, passed away at her home in Farmington Hills, Michigan on December 2, 2018. Burial is private, and a celebration of her life will take place in Virginia on a date to be determined.
Millie was born on April 1, 1919, in Baltimore, Maryland and was one of three children of Ann and Louis Salawitch. She graduated from high school in Baltimore and went on to attend the University of Maryland where she majored in Interior Design. After college, Millie married her first husband, Herbert Diamond and moved to New York where she modeled for department stores and became a buyer for Ohrbach’s Department Store. She was a renowned space designer and interior designer known for her taste and creative flair which she used to redesign homes, planes, boats as well as a kitchen for Good House Keeping’s Model Kitchen’s Showroom in New York City. She relocated to Washington, D.C. and opened Meloise, a clothing boutique and established a gift shop at the Washington Hebrew Congregation. She was active in numerous charities and chaired the Kaufman Camp for Boys and Girls which provided services to needy children. She loved to play golf and for years won her club’s championships as the top women’s golfer. She loved to travel and took many cruises around the world. She loved life and was a beloved friend to many. Always the center of attention for her beauty, style, and taste, it was her humor and warmness that those who knew her will miss the most.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Ruth Levin, and Florence Goldfarb, her granddaughter Tobey Diamond, her daughter Louise Diamond and by her husbands, Herbert Diamond, Ted Mandy, Arthur Simon, and Samuel Simon. She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Whisenant, six grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren.
The family asks that instead of flowers that a donation be made to a favorite charity in her honor. Millie believed that giving to those less fortunate is the best way to honor someone.
