As you aware the COVID-19 crisis has created a higher than normal number of deaths in a short period of time and funeral homes are becoming extremely busy with the number of families they must assist. In addition, government restrictions and protective gear and material shortages also hamper the normal operations of funeral homes. The Dorfman Chapel remains open during this time however we must implement certain restrictions on arranging and performing funeral services.
In an effort to protect our families from the Corona virus (COVID-19), we join with other Jewish funeral homes and follow the directive of Michigan's Governor and health professionals. The Michigan Board of Rabbis has mandated for the time being that funeral services will be held at graveside and limited to 10 attendees or fewer. However, many of our services, with the permission of the bereaved family, may be viewed live and are recorded on our website and may be viewed by you for free. We urge those of you who wish to participate in funeral services or memorial ceremonies to remain safe at home and do your participations virtually. Some of our families allow us to video the service which we post on our website, and if families are creating virtual shiva or memorial remembrances and inform us we also post that information on our website. We continue to provide professional, dignified and compassionate service. Our highest priority is the health, safety, and comfort of our families and staff. Thank you for your understanding.
Funeral homes take proper health/sanitation precautions normally and during this crisis we continue and expand these practices. We currently have sufficient protective gear (disinfectants, gloves/masks) for staff use only, but as you know shortages do occur. For families experiencing a death and in need of our services, we are encouraging arrangements be made via telephone or other communication avenues rather than coming into our chapel. We try to be available for whatever means you need for arranging our services but protect yourself and our staff by doing everything without face to face contact.
To help you in preparation for a funeral we have always had an informational form that can be filled out online and sent to us. The explanation page is https://www.thedorfmanchapel.com/preneedoverviewR.php or you can go directly to the form at https://www.thedorfmanchapel.com/preneedstartR.php. Fill out the information as much as you can; don't worry if you don't have answers to everything.
If for some reason we can't immediately respond to a request please bear with us. You can imagine during this time we are quite busy with receiving calls and making arrangements with families, rabbis, chevra kaddisha, and cemeteries, transporting the deceased from hospitals to our chapel and from our chapel to gravesites, servicing the funeral sites, filming/recording services, completing the legal records and permits required by the State of Michigan and doing the after care services we provide. We continue to provide professional, dignified and compassionate service.
Michigan, especially Wayne and Oakland counties, are currently one of the hotspots in the US for the COVID-19 outbreak. We and our suppliers will do our best to provide our families the professional service they deserve. Again, we thank you for your understanding.
